For the first time since 2005, there will be a firework display on Independence Day at Ascarate Park.
El Paso County Commissioners Court on Monday approved a $15,000 contract with Western Enterprises for the production of the Fourth of July firework display at the park, 6900 Delta Drive.
The last time the park hosted a fireworks display was in 2005 and it was put on by Western Playland, which since has relocated to Sunland Park, N.M.

"It's really nice to provide our families with another alternative, as supposed as spending a lot of money, you can go to our park and watch a professional beautiful display over Ascarate Lake with the mountains as a backdrop," said County Judge Ruben Vogt.
"We hope that folks find that a fun event for them to want to come out and participate in," he added.Chamizal passes on July 4th fireworks Al Borrego Sr. rides in the San Elizario veterans float Tuesday in the People’s 4th of July Parade in east El Paso.
County officials said that because the Chamizal National Park had chosen not to host a Fourth of July display this year, the county has the opportunity to capitalize on this community event.

The 12 to 15 minute fireworks display will begin about 9:30 p.m. The event will be free, although there is $5 parking fee per vehicle at the park on holidays.More for Ascarate Park Area residents from both Rim Road and Kern Place gathered for the 12th Annual Rim Road Association 4th of July Parade. County Parks Director Veronica Myers said the event is part of the efforts to bring more events to Ascarate Park.
"It's the prime place to have this event with the fireworks looking over the lake, illuminating the lake. It's centrally located so we think this will bring the most benefit to the community," she said.
People will be able to see the fireworks from anywhere around the north and east side of the lake as the fireworks will be shooting off from the gulf course up over into the lake, Myers said.
"We invite people to bring their blankets, their chairs, their picnics to the park," she said.
