The citizens of El Paso can only feel disgusted and betrayed by the latest scandal rocking city hall! City Attorney Silvia Borunda Firth's misconduct in not being honest about her husband’s business interest in the "Chinese laundry" and hiring a family member to do legal work for the city to the tune of a million dollars (that's nepotism-you can get away with that in the private sector, but not the public) is deplorable and inexcusable.
Mayor Dee Margo's conduct is also dishonest and deplorable! In light of her conduct her resignation shouldn't have been changed to retired but to "you’re fired." The mayor has always played fast and loose with the truth, but this latest sordid mess is beyond the pale! Margo's actions can only be viewed as defrauding the public out of nearly $300,000 and borders on criminality. The city's ongoing attempt to sweep everything under the rug can only be viewed as corrupt. This demands to be independently investigated by the appropriate state or federal agency.
East El PasoWhere’s Mayor Margo?
Lately we have seen an ad campaign by Crawford Buick called "Where's Crawford?" I was going to suggest that we all start a campaign called "Where's Margo?" This man is the most invisible mayor of all time. But then, thanks to Elida S. Perez, we had a sighting!
I am sure your readers were overjoyed to hear his admonition that the city council must not "disparage" Sylvia Borunda Firth. It seems clear that His Honor's wisdom brought forth the change from her "resignation" to her "retirement." I am sure that that distinction has been made so that we may celebrate her time with the city. It is also clear that we poor, uneducated taxpayers will probably never know why she was going to resign or be terminated.
El Pasoans should have never passed the Quality of Life bond. It has simply become an open account for council to spend the money frivolously on acquiring properties, fighting legal claims, and giving away tax incentives to all the rich folk who promise that the city will be better than ever when all is spent.
All we see is a city torn up by road construction, crumbling infrastructure, and higher taxes and fees. If I remember correctly, Dee Margo ran as a fiscal conservative but there is nothing conservative about the way he throws our money around to his friends and cronies.
As for the severance package given Sylvia Borunda Firth? Now that's what I call Quality of Life!
Upper ValleyEl Pasoans are diverse, friendly
Reading your front-page story on Spanish speakers being wary of speaking Spanish in public was bewildering. I and all my Latino friends are bilingual and we speak English or Spanish when communicating with each other and never consider (as far as I know) which language to use. If we are in the company of someone that we know doesn't speak Spanish, out of courtesy to them, we speak English only.
After reviewing your article a little closer, I realized the Spanish speakers were in the Phoenix area and I reasoned that non-bilingual people there are more intolerant of hearing people speak in a language they do not understand. I personally know no one who would be wary of speaking Spanish in public and would be more worried for any one that would look "nasty" at any of doing so. I think El Pasoans are more diverse and friendlier that other populations and those problems do not exist here.
Central El PasoHope and freedom
The future seemed uncertain but as one drove down I-10 between Bassett Center and Cielo Vista Mall early morning on Memorial Day, one could witness two young men placing American flags all along the access roads. As one tried to get onto the sidewalk, the other extended his hand to help him out.
To you patriots, thank you for reminding this soul of the hope and freedom this country stands for!
